FFXI's job system is mostly adapted from Final Fantasy III. Jobs have unique abilities which players must activate to gain its effects, they last a limited time and have a cooldown time before they can be used again. Traits are passive abilities which are always in effect and there is a special ability that performs some extraordinary function and has an extraordinary 2 hour cooldown period. Players may change their jobs any time and are also able to get a support job once they have achieved level 18 in order to learn additional skills and try different combinations. Players improve their job abilities by defeating monsters or completing quests. There are 20 different jobs to choose from which include Warrior, White Mage, Monk, Red Mage, Black Mage, Thief, Paladin, Dark Knight, Ranger, Beastmaster, Bard, Summoner, Ninja, Samurai, Dragoon, Blue Mage, Corsair, Dancer, Puppetmaster, and Scholar.
